The Mercer Hotel tasked us with envisioning a lush sanctuary for their guests—a serene escape from the vibrant energy of SOHO. As part of the hotel’s transformation, several spaces are being refreshed, including a renovation of guest rooms and the debut of Sartiano's restaurant in 2023. These updates, along with the courtyard, signify a reimagining of this storied hotel.
Our design concepts for the courtyard revolve around simplicity and elegance, utilizing handcrafted materials to allow guests to seamlessly flow through the space. Embracing the brick walls and wrought iron, we sought to create a room that emphasizes form, minimalism, and the beauty of absence. The courtyard offers an intimate and serene escape in the heart of SOHO, New York. Our design draws on a Japanese-inspired aesthetic, merging minimalist elegance with natural tranquility. We incorporated handmade ceramic pots and carefully curated low-light plants to create a soothing environment.
Crafted with sustainability in mind, the slatted wood screens and bench are made from Thermally Modified Oak with a custom finish, providing both privacy and versatility for this urban retreat. Additionally, we designed a custom dining table from a large natural slab of salvaged sweetgum sourced locally from New York City. This design fosters a sense of refuge amidst the city’s hustle, with subtle details inviting guests to unwind and reconnect with nature. This exquisite blend of craftsmanship and greenery transforms The Mercer Hotel’s courtyard into a tranquil garden oasis that perfectly complements the hotel’s refined and luxurious atmosphere.

Drawing inspiration from Japanese garden principles, the arrangement of plants and pots emphasizes simplicity, balance, and harmony. The handmade ceramic pots serve as focal points, their artisanal quality adding texture and character to the space. We selected a variety of shade-tolerant plants that thrive in the low-light conditions of the urban environment, ensuring lush, healthy greenery year-round.
