The historic Hotel Chelsea, once home and a creative center for artists like Andy Warhol, Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan, approached us with a vision. They wanted to extend their new spa onto the terrace to further support their mission of wellness. The spa terrace had been undeveloped for the last century, presenting an exciting opportunity to reimagine the space as a lush garden oasis.
The concept for the spa was to animate the space, bringing life and softness to the otherwise urban setting of brick, steel, and tile. Our plant palette is loose and lush, emphasizing movement and light while incorporating medicinal, edible, and fragrant species scattered throughout the terrace.
We collaborated closely with interior designer Cate Mills and the Hotel Chelsea team to create a space that feels secluded, quiet, and peaceful. The idea was to craft an environment where guests could experience the light and beauty of the terrace as they moved throughout the spa areas. We designed a custom pergola that feels as though it has been part of the building for 100 years. It was custom-fabricated off-site and carefully assembled to fit seamlessly within the space. Guests of the spa can wander onto the terrace as if it were their own private retreat to reflect and regenerate.
