The vision was to create garden ruins on a rooftop in Manhattan, embedded with meandering pathways where seemingly wild wisteria overflows the terrace to engulf the entire building from above. Designed in intimate collaboration with internationally acclaimed Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt, we brought this ambitious forgotten landscape to life in one of New York’s most iconic hospitality spaces, The Greenwich Hotel.

We put our expertise in design, horticulture, and construction management to the test, pushing the limits of possibility to enact these terrace gardens as part of a major renovation of the hotel’s penthouse suite. A duet of two terraces wraps around the suite, while large glass windows offer expansive, panoramic views of the neighborhood, with protected viewpoints from the outside in.

Cultivating an uncontrolled sensibility took artistic precision. Our curated topography, informed by Vervoordt’s guiding aesthetic vision, integrated over 30 mature wisteria vines, 15 trees, and more than one thousand perennials. We designed and managed custom rooftop soil infrastructures, with specially engineered bulk soil craning up to the terraces for installation. Carefully selected stones and other natural materials contribute to the mystique and effortless luxury of the site. Its lushness at once speaks to and accentuates the charm of the Greenwich Hotel’s historic character, driving home the allure of its luxury and privacy.
