This rooftop design transforms a challenging space into a seamless extension of a modern loft apartment. From one side, the cityscape unfolds in sweeping views, while the other connects effortlessly with the living room through expansive floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows. The goal was to create more than just a roof terrace, to craft a space that feels intrinsically tied to the interior, dissolving the boundaries between indoors and out.
D’Apostrophe approached us with a schematic drawing of the terrace’s potential use. Their vision featured waving pathways and mixed planting. Together, we refined this concept, focusing on technical viability, aesthetic alignment with the interiors, and the selection of plants, pots, and edging.
It takes a bold client to embrace the idea of trading static, paved surfaces for a dynamic landscape filled with movement and life. The decision to forgo traditional terrace designs allowed us to create a rooftop that is lush, inviting, and alive. The result is not just a usable outdoor space, but a true extension of the living area, one that enhances the apartment’s modern ethos.
Every detail was meticulously considered. Soil placement, planter heights, and layered textures were all designed to introduce depth and movement, softening the inherent flatness of a rooftop. A curated plant palette and custom handmade planters emphasize modern sweeps and repeating forms, creating a harmonious flow throughout the space.
Part of the magic lies in the entrance. As you step off the elevator in downtown Manhattan and enter the apartment, your eyes are drawn immediately to the garden through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The view feels both dramatic and inviting, offering a lush, dynamic environment that seamlessly integrates with the urban skyline.
