Working closely with GRT Architects, we reimagined the Amant Foundation into a green retreat amidst a stark, industrial urban setting in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The rooftop of the space, located in an industrial neighborhood with no neighboring tall buildings, is wide open, sunny, and breezy—an ideal setting for an escape within the city.

The rooftop features a bar and lounge alongside a larger, enclosed private dining room. Pergolas, decking, and thoughtful lighting create a welcoming, casual atmosphere, offering warmth through tone and material. The idea of a green roof seemed like a natural fit for this project. By integrating an intensive green roof system, we incorporated the benefits of stormwater management and rooftop sustainability. VERDANT pushed the concept further, designing a model with topographic changes and seasonality.

Native plants, such as sumac and myrica, provide shade while evoking a windswept coastal aesthetic. The forms emphasize durability and natural flow over formality, celebrating ecological resilience. These plantings ebb and flow with the seasons, creating an ever-changing environment that enriches the visitor’s experience. By incorporating sustainable design principles, the project offers a profound sense of immersion in nature, even within an industrial setting.

This lush environment seamlessly connects to an adjacent courtyard and gallery, creating a harmonious extension of the art foundation’s vision. Together with GRT Architects, we designed a space that invites guests to pause, reflect, and connect with nature.

At the core of the Amant Foundation is a restaurant that doubles as an exhibition space, serving as a space to a prominent art gallery in the tri-state area. The thoughtful integration of greenery with architectural precision highlights the synergy between hospitality, creativity, and sustainability. This dynamic space not only provides an escape from the city but also enriches the experience of art and community in a setting that feels both innovative and restorative.
