Skymeadow is an expansive, ever-changing rooftop landscape created for Flavorpaper’s Brooklyn headquarters. Rooted in the inventive wallpaper company’s eclectic sensibilities, we drew additional inspiration from the rooftop’s vast possibilities for efficiency and ecological symbiosis.

The entire Flavorpaper office was undergoing a gut renovation by Portland-based Skylab Architecture. Our approach embraced the spirit of collaboration to extend the spatial refresh to the available exterior footprint. We began by dedicating a significant amount of space to a sweeping tapestry of greenery, carefully selecting a multitude of shades and textures. The effect is one of lushness and abundance—an open-air space that overflows with decorative arrangements of native grasses and wider-leaf perennials, all planted with deliberate attention to the plants’ interactions as they change throughout the year.

The sprawling design required a custom, roof-wide 12-inch deep planting system. We also employed an intensive green roof infrastructure that allows the meadow to absorb significant stormwater, playing an important role as a buffer to the city’s inundated stormwater management systems.

Framed by custom concrete pavers, a black steel-paneled railing, and pyramidal skylights built by Skylab, Skymeadow elegantly evolves between seasons. Its graceful movement and gradual aesthetic changes echo the beautiful cacophony of Flavorpaper’s vast product range, created in the studio just below.

The garden not only pays homage to the client’s vivaciousness but also to their spirit of community. The thoughtful resilience and unpretentiousness of our landscape design contribute to the rooftop’s use as a site for hosting friends at gatherings, big or small.
